Birds

1994, Gelatin silver print on fiber base paper, each 115 x 115 cm (and 60 x 50 cm), 30 works

These photographs capture flocks of pigeons suddenly taking flight from near the window of Onodera’s apartment in Montmartre. The overlapping wings of the birds fill the frame, which captures the motion of them extending broadly in an almost panicked disarray and the movement of the rushing air. The violent motion is the first element to attract our attention, followed by the gray skies of Paris in the background, evoking the route of the disappearing birds. This is one of the series that was included in “Down“, exhibited at three Tokyo galleries in 1995.
